    April Outdoor Lion's Learning

Once again, students at Francestown Elementary School celebrated Outdoor Lion’s Learning, this time with a focus on the wonders of water. In April's session, students explored the connections between pollinators in the garden and the health of nearby water.

With the help of Kara from the Harris Center, students examined macro aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates, learning how these creatures play a vital role in the environment. They then made their way to the river, equipped with nets, hoping to catch some of their own. We were in luck! The students discovered caddisflies, dragonfly nymphs, tadpoles, and even fish.

To wrap up the day, students worked with local artist Julie Brown to complete a mural.

NHEE Brings Artist in Residence to FES

We’re excited to welcome artist Julie Brown to Francestown Elementary School! Julie worked with our students to create a beautiful mosaic mural that reflects our Outdoor Lion’s Learning experiences and celebrates the vibrant FES community.

Earlier this year, students submitted sketches inspired by their learning and our natural surroundings. Julie thoughtfully combined these designs into a single piece of artwork. The final mural will be a symbol of our students’ connection to the world around them and the strong sense of community we share at FES.

Special thank you to the New Hampshire Environmental Educators (NHEE). The grant money given to support OLL has brought Julie Brown to our school.

    Kindergarten Plays Guess My Number

Students sit together to play a game called Guess My Number. One student secretly chooses a number on the number line, while the others take turns asking questions to narrow down the possibilities. Questions like "Is it greater than 10?" or "Is it an even number?" help develop number sense. It’s a simple and fun game to try at home!

A Harris Center Owl Prowl Comes to FES

Francestown Elementary School would like to extend our thanks to Jenna and Kara from the Harris Center for Conservation Education for visiting our school on the evening of April 2. Their engaging presentation began in the multipurpose room, where around 65 Francestown Elementary community members learned about the fascinating adaptations of owls and the unique calls that help identify them in the wild.

Following the indoor session, participants ventured into the woods for a nighttime exploration in search of these elusive birds. While the group enthusiastically tried their hand at barred owl calls, the owls remained out of sight. Still, the experience brought to mind the beloved book Owl Moon and its message of patient wonder: "Not today but maybe next time."
